Heroes of the Oceans

Heroes of the Oceans
Rolex’s Perpetual Planet initiative supports those using science to understand the world’s environmental challenges and who are finding ways to restore balance to our ecosystems, particularly the oceans, which are under siege from a host of pressures.
Storyboard
Every breath we take connects us to the oceans, says Sylvia Earle. In the film “Heroes of the Oceans”, the legendary oceanographer introduces six marine scientists who, with the support of Rolex, are working to build ocean science or save endangered animals. From planting resilient corals on the Great Barrier Reef, protecting giant manta rays of Peru, to studying the effect of noise from human activities on cetaceans such as whales and dolphins, these scientists have dedicated their lives to marine conservation.
Challenge
We were engaged to capture the story of Rolex Laurette, Dr Brad Norman. The contribution Dr Norman’s work has made to the conservation of the worldʼs biggest fish, the endangered Whale Shark, is highly significant.
As the world braced for the COVID-19 Pandemic in March 2020, the series producer was soon jumping on a plane back to London as the world borders slowly began to shut down. The production department of BBC turned to a local Australian crew to produce the content for the documentary, with camera operators stepping up to fill the positions of directors, sound recordist, interviewers, and other roles. Who doesn’t love a challenge?
